What is a clinical trial?

The National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) defines a clinical trial as a research project which compares the effects of two or more medicines, treatments, or procedures. The aim of a clinical trial is to produce high-quality evidence about the best way to treat a patient or the best way to prevent an illness from occurring.

How do I take part in a clinical trial?

You can take part as a:

  • a patient with a particular illness or health condition
  • a volunteer (a member of the public without a current illness or health condition).

We have several clinical trials on a broad range of topics taking place here at the King’s Clinical Research Facility. A snapshot of some of our active trials which are open to new participants will be updated shortly.
